After retiring from over 35 years in the Insurance industry, I was looking for an opportunity to give some time to a community oriented cause. I saw a vacancy in 2019 for a Chair of Trustees at 40degreez which I learned provided youth services within its community centre in town. Trying to fill Janet Maines’s shoes after her 14 years as chair wasn’t easy but I soon learned that the work carried out by the youth workers and volunteers was delivering something very special and motivational. In spite of all the challenges in securing funding and continuing to ‘keep things going’ , seeing the sometimes significant positive changes in young people’s lives that we work with has been the major driver and incentive to continue building on the work that the charity has been doing for 35 years. I often tell people that one of the greatest gifts you can give is your time and to do so within 40degreez continues to be a privilege.

About Peter...
I became a trustee of 40 Degreez because my son joined the organisation several years ago to help support young people, who were finding the world a confusing and complicated place and were struggling to make sense of it. He went to school with a lot of young people who he found needed support in this area and thought he could contribute to their success and development moving into adulthood. Helping at the the charity gave him a huge sense of satisfaction and confidence to work in the support worker sector. A career path he finds very rewarding. The charity and its staff can and do change young lives for the better and I am proud in some small way to be part of it.

Norman lives in Farnham and is a recently retired school bursar having worked in three schools over 22 years. He serves as a trustee of 4 charities. Other interests include gardening, hiking and involvement in St Saviours Parish church in Guildford. He is married to Kate who until recently managed a nursing home and they have two married daughters and two grandchildren. Having great admiration for the vision of 40Degreez and the staff who serve the charity, I consider it a privilege to be involved as a Trustee.
Rachel Davis
Trustee
Hi, I’m Rachel. I’m a mum of four, and family means everything to me. That’s a big part of why I wanted to become a trustee – I know first-hand how important it is for young people to have the right support around them, and I’m really keen to contribute positively to the community. Alongside family life, I’ve spent the last 20 years working in incident and crisis response, a world that is different to youth work, but one that’s taught me a lot about staying calm under pressure and supporting people when things don’t go to plan. I’m excited to bring my experience and energy to 40 Degreez and to play a part in helping young people thrive.
I am a Mum to 4 boys. 40 Degreez has been a lifeline for my boys especially for their neurodiversities. They feel like they have found their tribe and enjoy being able to socialise in a safe space with safe adults around them. I wanted to be able to support 40 Degreez in any way I can to continue being this safe space for all young people so decided to step up as a Trustee
